The Art of Ballet

In 1947 John Field created the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet to take over from the Vic-Wells Ballet Company, before it gaining a Royal Charter and becoming the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, until moving to Birmingham in 1990 and changing its name to Birmingham Royal Ballet.  It no longer has any official relationship with either The Royal Ballet, or Royal Ballet School.

In 1950 the well known dance couple Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin, who had until 1935 been with the Vic-Wells, founded the London Festival Ballet, with the express desire to become a touring Company. Just a year later they were already on their first international tour.

Later becoming the English National Ballet, the Company has become an iconic world ambassador for English Ballet. An early performance on Eurovision to celebrate the wedding between Prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly, spread their name very quickly along-side their extensive touring schedule. The Company has always been able to attract guest dancers of the highest calibre, which has further enhanced its reputation.
