Adeline Genee was appointed the first President and her successor on retirement was Margot Fonteyn, who had been the leading principal dancer and is still recognized as one of the greatest ballerinas of her time. Fonteyn remained as President until her death in 1991.

Also in 1920 Marie Rambert started the Rambert Ballet, collaborating with the renowned choreographer Frederick Ashton. The Company performed on the third day of television transmission in the UK.

In the 1940’s the Company was acquired by Harold Rubin and was transformed in to a touring Company, becoming the first English Ballet Company to tour in China in 1957.

As a touring Company and with a history steeped in innovation, in 1966, Ballet Rambert was re-launched with two strings to its bow, alternating Classical Ballet and Modern Dance techniques in to the daily training.

In 1987 the Company became the Rambert Dance Company, reflecting the contemporary nature of the Company Occupational Health Services

In 1926, the Academy of Choreographic Art was created by Ninette de Valois, and in 1931 she joined with Lilian Bayliss, who owned the Old Vic and Sadler’s Wells Theatres, to stage dance performances, forming the Vic-Wells Ballet School which become the Royal Ballet of England in 1956 and the Vic-Wells Ballet Company, which became the Royal Ballet which in 1946 became the resident ballet company at the Royal Opera House in London.
